Pregnancy is a magical time, and the best way to immortalize this moment is by having a maternity shoot. It’s an opportunity to celebrate your baby bump before the arrival of your little one. But if you’re not sure what to prepare for the photoshoot, we’ve got you covered. Here are tips to ensure you look positively glowing in your pregnancy pictures, no matter the challenges.

Hit the Spa Before Your Maternity Shoot

Having a baby takes a lot of energy. A spa trip in the days leading up to your maternity photoshoot can help you feel more refreshed and camera-ready. Start by booking a prenatal massage (per your doctor’s approval) to soothe aching muscles on your back and shoulders. It’s not only relaxing but can also improve your sleep. Many studies have even reported that it can reduce labor pain.

While in your mini haven, treat yourself to a mani-pedi because beautifully painted nails are a total confidence booster. Ask your nail technician to use non-toxic polishes and choose a design that complements your mood board. If you’re dealing with hormonal breakouts, take the time to do a facial at least one week before the shoot.

Opt for a Clean Makeup Look

A barely-there makeup look enhances your facial features, allowing your natural beauty to shine through. Another plus? It’s timeless. If you’re planning to do your own makeup, create a smooth canvas by applying a moisturizer and hydrating primer. Choose water-based products with a satin finish to give you that lit-from-within glow. And of course, you can always dab more highlighter on the high points of your face. Don’t forget to add a gentle wash of color to your lips and cheeks!

Try Out Different Styles

Everyday attire can make your maternity shoot look more laid-back and intimate.

A maternity shoot is not cheap, so get your money’s worth by experimenting with a variety of aesthetics. First, discuss the theme with your photographer. The options are virtually endless, ranging from casual to elegant, from beachy to vintage. Feel free to pick more than one as you can easily transition between them during the session. For example, you can do the glam concept inside the studio, and when the golden hour approaches, move outdoors to take boho-inspired snaps.

You should also prepare different outfits for the shoot. Consider bringing flowy dresses that create a flattering silhouette, comfy T-shirt bras with denim pants like Gigi Hadid’s, and chunky sweatersà la Shay Mitchell. These three ensembles cover a myriad of themes, so you won’t run out of things to wear.

Play Around with Props

It won’t be long until you find the “hand on baby bump” pose…tiring. Besides, you want your photo album to be unique and full of personality. A way around this dilemma is to work with props. Although most photography studios provide them, it’s a good idea to feature sentimental items in your maternity shoot, such as:

  • The latest ultrasound image
  • Baby shoes
  • A baby jumper
  • Childhood toys
  • Your pet

As for maternity poses, don’t limit yourself to the usual. Try the over-the-shoulder glance, leaning against a wall, and lounging on a sofa. If you’re camera-shy, ask your photographer to take candid shots as well.

Turn Up That Pregnancy Glow

Surprise! Pregnancy glow is not a myth. According to the American Pregnancy Association, your body produces 50% more blood, making your skin look brighter and rosy. On the flip side, your pregnancy hormones can also cause your skin to amp up its sebum production. This may lead to clogged pores and pimples.

To maintain your pregnancy glow, use Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash. Made with exfoliating beads and NutriumMoisture™ technology, this body cleanser removes dead skin cells and impurities while restoring hydration. Your skin will look brighter and feel softer after just one wash.

If your pregnancy hormones trigger skin dryness and itching, Dove Deeply Nourishing Body Wash boasts the same NutriumMoisture™ technology, only with more hydrating power. It delivers nourishment up to 20 layers deep within the epidermis and helps the skin to retain moisture. Basically, it cleanses like soap and moisturizes like lotion!

Your maternity shoot is your moment to shine. So go all out, mama-to-be! Show off those curves and have fun in front of the camera. In a few weeks, you’ll finally get to meet your bundle of joy and have a mom-and-baby photoshoot session!
